Walking
With the National Park on Callow Hall’s doorstep there is no need to use the car to take advantage of the endless possibilities of walking in the spectacular Derbyshire countryside:

Local maps and suggestions are available from reception.

Why not enjoy:

- The walk along the banks of the River Dove to the famous stepping stones in Dovedale, as described by Izaac Walton, to Milldale then up the hill to the lovely village of Alstonefield (6 miles) for a good pub lunch at The George.

- A walk along the former railway line, now a walking and cycling trail, to the beautiful village of Tissington (4 miles) a village known for its splendid and historic Hall and well dressing. The Stables is a popular stop for a snack or lunch (check opening times).

- A visit to the National Trust property and grounds at Ilam (as seen in the BBC production of ?Jane Eyre) by either walking along the river bank or by using minor roads (3 miles). After enjoying a meal (lunch or tea) at the National Trust property, there is always the option of catching the bus back to Callow!

- Borrowing a local OS map and choosing one of the many footpaths that cross the area and selecting your own route

Cycling

Just five minutes from Callow Hall is the White Peak Cycle Route with over 70 miles of cycling paths and roads to enjoy. The Ashbourne Cycle Hire Centre is at the start of the traffic free Tissington Trail, that leads on to High Peak Trail and has a range of adult and children’s cycles to hire, plus details and maps of routes.

Fishing

We have a private half mile stretch of water on the Bentley Brook, a tributary of the River Dove (as written about in Izaak Walton’s ‘The Complete Angler’). It is challenging fishing (in that there are a few trees so waders are helpful!) Guests are welcome to fish if they bring a rod and have their own River Authorities Licence.

Packed lunches

Delicious packed lunches can be prepared to suit your requirements - please order from reception by 9pm the day before required.
